Drug Reimportation
Over the last year, support for a reimportation law has been building, as voters have identified this as a key issue. A group of House Republicans made reimportation a central issue during the Medicare prescription drug debate last year, and a number of state officials struggling with escalating drug costs, including both Democrats and Republicans, have indicated their support for such a measure. It is not clear what action, if any, the Senate will take on the bills before them
Outsourcing American Jobs
President Bush reported to Congress that the movement of American factory jobs and white collar work to other countries is part of a positive transformation that will enrich the U.S. economy over time, even if it causes short-term pain and dislocation.  The International Longshore and Warehouse Union strongly disagrees
Homeland Security
The Drafting Committee for the platform of the Democratic Party held a hearing on May 22, 2004 in Portland Oregon. The subject was Homeland Security. Representative Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) placed a call to Coast Legislative Committee member Dawn DesBrisay (Oregon) and asked for the ILWU’s participation. This can be taken as a sign that the Democratic Party understands that the ILWU is on the frontline of maritime security and has important insights and expertise in the area.
